Experiment in ‘WikiGovernment’ Helps Reform Philadelphia

ReformBallot.orgPhiladelphia is the birthplace of our democracy and EvolveStrategies' produced ReformBallot.org added to that tradition this spring by creating a reform agenda using the same technology that drives Wikipedia to help reform the City's government.

Over the course of two months more than 500 Philadelphians signed onto the R.E.F.O.R.M. Compact and dozens helped to write and vote on items to included in the R.E.F.O.R.M. Agenda.

The Daily News hailed it as, "an interesting experiment in democracy."

Candidates were then asked to indicate their support for the 24-point R.E.F.O.R.M. Agenda.

Before voters go to the polls on May 15th to pick a new mayor and city council they can review candidate positions on the agenda and print out a 'reform ballot' from the site.

MarcStier Marc Stier and Andy Toy are two experienced advocates and activists as well as first time candidates for Philadelphia City Council.

Community Beats Railroad Goliath with Help of Network Centric Strategy

Free River ParkOn April 24th Mayor John F. Street signed the agreement between the City of Philadelphia and CSX Railroad to keep the two street level crossings to the Schuylkill River Park Trail open and made safe for park users.

This agreement came after a coordinated effort by the community to guarantee pedestrian access to the park. Evolve helped the cause by providing web technology and campaign strategy that galvanized the community and park users and negotiated an historic agreement with CSX Railroad to establish new ground level crossings.

That is why Evolve created a website for Artist LINC Philadelphia with interactive tools that allow artists to receive and exchange information about themselves and their craft and will help to build an informed constituency that collectively can leverage change.

Trends From the Trenches

Widgets Extend Reach of Online Advocacy

You may have heard a lot about widgets lately with companies like Apple and Yahoo! distributing them to millions of desktops, and sites like Ebay using them to drive online commerce.

But what is a widget? And how can it help in your efforts to increase your constituency? Here's what you need to know:

What's in a Widget?

A widget is an object that can be placed on a user's desktop or website and which can distribute information such as the weather, provide an instant messaging interface, video content, or any number of applications.

Empowering the Edges

The power of widgets is in the users' hands.  Once a widget goes viral it can be distributed through social networks by the users themselves.

Democracy in the Hands of the People

Evolve made headlines last November with VoterStory.org, which used a distributed widget to collect hundreds of voter problems and sent them to trusted voter protection groups. Look for more from VoterStory.org this Fall!

Fundraising Gets Distributed

Evolve has consulted with ChipIn to help deploy fundraising widgets which allow donors to support their favorite causes on websites which they visit regularly and trust.
